Choosing which camera is best for you

This summer most of us would go out on vacations and you would't want to miss capturing these special moments. This is the reason why everyone loves taking photos that we would surely cherish for a long time. Nowadays there are several cameras available in the market, making it very difficult to decide which one to buy. I believe that there is a camera for you that would fit your need and your budget. Anyway the important thing is the memory is captured and you can share them to the world.

These are the common questions that we always hear.

How many megapixels?

Does it  shoot video at 1080p of full HD?

Wide lens? Fast lens?

Lowlight?

Do I really need a DSLR?

What camera do I need for travel?

Do I need a waterproof camera?

Before you plan your purchase always consider your budget. Set an amount on how much you're willing to spend.  Where are you planning on using your camera? For travel or casual shooting?  

Today I will be discussing about the 2 different types of cameras that I own, the DSLR and point and shoot camera.



I currently own 3 digital cameras. For the past several years I’ve accumulated and sold some of my cameras. It have left me 3 cameras in my possession which I found very useful for my lifestyle. First one is the Nikon D80, next is the Sony DSC-W200, and the last is Olympus 720sw.  All 3 cameras have its pros and cons. I’m not going to dive into technicalities, I’ll try to explain the reason I kept those cameras over the years.   The first camera I’ll be discussing is the Nikon D80. It’s a Digital SLR with interchangeable lens. I owned this camera since 2007, coming from his smaller brother D40.

The Nikon D40 is a fine DSLR camera. All the manual controls are there. But once you use it for a long time, you’ll notice that you’ll be more than often going into the menus and wishing that there’s a dedicated button on doing a specific task like adjusting the white balance or changing the exposure settings.  That’s why I upgraded to the Nikon D80.  The buttons for the D80 are all well arranged that you can press those buttons even if your eye is on the viewfinder.  There’s a dedicated dial to change the aperture and shutter. Another bonus after the upgrade is that I can autofocus on older lenses like the 50mm f1.8. I’ve been using it for more than 5 years now and I still don’t feel the need to upgrade it to a higher model.  The second camera I’ll be discussing is the Olympus 720sw.  This is the first all-proof camera I’ve owned and up until now it never failed to amaze me. This is my ultimate travel camera when I go beaches and out of town. This camera was purchased last 2006 and up until now it’s alive. This camera was built like a tank.  Like any other point and shoot cameras it has its limitation. There aren’t enough manual controls to play with like setting the shutter or the aperture. When you go past ISO 400 you’ll be getting a visible amount of noise.  But for a camera that can handle almost all those physical abuse, you can actually just disregard those disadvantages. The third camera is the Sony DSC-W200. It’s another point and shoot camera. What I love about this camera is its size.  Image quality is sharp and the colors standout from Olympus 720sw. Another advantage is that I can do manual exposure with this camera.  I usually bring this camera along when we go to malls, because it’s not fun to lug around a DSLR camera especially here in Manila. 

I love all those three cameras that I just mentioned above. But now I’m currently searching for another camera.  Here’s the list of features I’m looking for my new camera.

a.       BSI (back side illuminated CMOS sensor) – it’s a new type of CMOS sensor that was commonly used before by lowlight security cameras. Sony is currently using this type of CMOS sensor with their new cameras. Its called the Exmor R.



b.      Full HD recording – wouldn’t it be nice to have a camera that shoots 1080P 60fps video at a bitrate of 24Mbps? Well for me camcorders are out. Hmm.. BSI CMOS and 1080P.. sounds like a match.

c.       Compact – I just don’t like lugging around a camera bag with me while I’m strolling in a mall.  I just want to slip it inside my pocket or bag.

d.      Manual exposure mode – Don’t ever let full auto control your every shot. There’s always a instance that you want to manually set the shutter or the aperture for the scene you’re capturing.  Its even better if you have aperture priority or shutter priority in the dials.. 

e.      Optical Image Stabilization – since were looking for a compact camera, bringing a tripod alone defeats that purpose. Always double check this because there are companies marketing their camera with built-in stabilization. Later you will find out that its only Electric Image Stabilization.  There will be no lens or sensor shift here since its trying to process the stabilization electronically. Believe me it’s not that good compared with Optical Image Stabilization. This is a must if you planning to taking videos from your camera.

f.        Optical Zoom – when checking the zoom specification of the camera always be skeptical when there’s a word there with 100x zoom. Because they’re trying to hide the truth that its optical zoom is just 3x. 100x is always the digital zoom. Let me explain to you what digital zoom is. Its like trying to zoom in your photo with Photoshop.  While zooming in the image digitally it will really mess up your shot. So I suggest disabling this feature if you have this turned on with your camera. 5x, 10x and 16x optical zooms are recommended ranges. But if you planning on using it for travel I suggest getting a 16x optical zoom camera. I also recommend checking the focal length of the camera.  At least 24mm wide.

g.       LCD screen size – the de-facto size for the screen nowadays is 3.0 inches. Anything lower than that is like purchasing a camera model from last 2 years ago.  Always check if the LCD is viewable on any angles and under the sun.  A touch screen is very welcome addition especially the touch to focus feature.  If it’s a touch screen camera make sure that it’s very responsive.  Make sure it’s a capacitive type touch screen so it wont be a burden digging the through the menus. Also check the accuracy of the colors reproduced on the LCD screen.

h.      Image Quality – of course image quality is everything always check if the camera is properly reproducing the right color tones? Is it overexposing or underexposing the image? A 16 megapixel camera is not any better than 6 megapixel camera. The image quality always relies on the sensor size, optics and the lens coating of the camera. So always don’t base your purchase just because of the bigger megapixel value.

i.         Price Range - the price range I’m current looking at will be from Php15,000 to Php20,000. However, I can go lower if I can find the right camera or even go a little higher its Php1000 to Php2000 more.

a.       Canon S100

c.       Panasonic GF2 with 14mm pancake lens

d.      Fuji X10

e.      Canon Powershot SX230

 

On my next blog, I'll be adding more cameras from the list and I'll be discussing the Pros and Cons from the 5 cameras I selected.  Hopefully I'll be able to purchase one of these cameras this week and I'll be posting an indepth review on why I bought the camera. Playing with colors: How to give life to your picture frames

Today I decided that I wanted to hang a Picture frame that will display several photos just like this picture frame. I decided that I will be playing with colors today to make it look more creative. I haven't decided on which of photos I will be using so now I'm going to try and play with photos that I've taken of my friend kuya Jason. We had our photo shoot right before 2011 ended. I have chosen one of his good shots as the primary photo. The primary photo will be printed larger than the other photos. Here is what I've chosen.

There were a lot of better photos taken that day but i will be posting them on a different date. I used slightly yellowish lights in this one to make it look serious and for now ill keep the picture as it is without editing. I have also chosen a secondary photo shown below.

 The secondary photo appears bluish because I used blue lighting. I have decided that I want it to have a darker blue color and increase the shadow on his face to make it look more dramatic so I further enhanced the photo . Actually kuya Jason looks scary in this shot I hope he doesn't get mad when he sees this post lol.

Now I like how almost only half of his face is seen due to the increased shadows and the blue tone appears darker now. Next, using the enhanced photo we will start playing with colors. I changed the colors and got it on different hues as shown below.

Don't you think they all look great with all vibrant colors. I wanted to use all of them but unfortunately the frame will only allow me 5 secondary photos. Now lets let arrange them to see how they would look like in the picture frame.

I wanted to play with it further and I think it would be nice if the primary photo would be black and white so it balances out the colorful secondary photos. Let's also add some more borders in each photo and here is the final look.

 I would suggest that you use different poses for the secondary pictures instead of just a single photo that I used. I used only 1 for the secondary photo to show how changing or using different colors would appear better than just using your regular photos. Now the only thing I need to do is to have my pictures taken so I can start making my own lol. I hope you try doing this too its a nice addition to you wall.

Congratulations Graduates of 2012: Improving your graduation creative shots

This time of the year is the time of graduations. I still remember when I graduated last year. I was a graduate of batch 2011. Remembering having my graduation photos taken and I was then looking forward for good creative shots. I was already gaining weight at that time and saw that a lot of my pictures had the wrong angles making me look fat. I chose the best shots and enhanced them myself using photoshop. You can also try editing your own photos, by doing that you can actually get the results that you really want. Here are some before and after pictures.


In this first photo I improved the background.by darkening it and adding some purple color to make it look scarier. I'm actually a vampire here but since it looks plain. I decided to add the light effect so it would seem like I'm holding a power ball or something so now its like I'm from an X-men Movie or something. Since this is my creative shot for graduation I cropped another picture and added my head to this one. Making it look more creative.

In this second Photo i thought that the shot was too far so I cropped the picture to make it smaller. This made a huge difference right away . I made the background darker and improved the color of the picture itself. Since I'm a vampire here I added fangs and added hair to make it look dramatic.I think adding hair also made me look thinner lol. You can click on the picture to see the fangs, they're small though.

See  how you can improve your photos? Giving it life and Making it more dramatic. You can change it until you get the results you want. Try to picture out what you want before you start and while doing it you'll see that it would even turn out better. It's fun to use you creativity once in a while.
